The Bearded Texan Vol. 5

It’s been awhile. That is the theme for me and for the month of April in one of the best sports months of the year. It’s been awhile since we saw a young American star dominate a golf tournament when Jordan Spieth took Augusta to school reminding us of a young Tiger Woods bursting onto the scene in 1997. It was one of the most dominant performances we have seen and never once were we in doubt that the 21 year old Dallas native would pull it off. Or at least in my mind it was one of the most fun Masters in recent memory and very little doubt crept into my mind as he conquered the course more powerfully than me in a billiards tournament on a Saturday night. Confidence along with talent is a big reason we are seeing Jordan Spieth crash the party and ascend to World No. 2 less than two years into his professional career. Golf has nothing to worry about heading into the future with names like McIIroy, Spieth, and Reed headlining the sport.

Also, I know it has been 3 weeks, buuuuut BASEBALL is back! This is one the things I anticipate the most each year in the world of sports. It signals spring, hope and the boys of summer on the tube each night. It brings everything from crazy endings to silly brawls(i.e. Kansas City). You can hear more on my podcast with fellow writer Jason Goodson on www.leadingoffsports.com.

I want to touch on that Kansas City thing for just a moment. Yes-it brings attention, hype, and intensity to a sport that cries for attention but it is truly silly. Baseball has unwritten rules and an archaic eye-for-an-eye mentality that I will never understand. I personally am not a grudge holder or a vengeance seeker but it is ingrained into the very fabric of baseball. I just have one thing to say: It’s APRIL! Are the Royals still mad about not beating the one man show Madison Bumgarner? Yorvada Ventura: calm down please and understand that when someone gets a hit off of you its called baseball. Yes it is funny, exciting but it will get really old when baseball lays down the hammer and it costs you playoffs because your guys rather play hockey than baseball.

I know this seems rather short and sweet, but outside of NBA playoffs (Warriors in 7 over Cavs) and NHL Stanley Cup Playoff (Rangers in 6 over Flames!?), The sports world has been relatively quiet(oddly) the last month. I will add one more interesting note: Josh Hamilton will be back in Texas–according to breaking news as I write this post. Next week we have the NFL draft which I will be live tweeting along side many other AGSH writers so follow me on Twitter @JustinNeely and tune in next week as I talk about Greg Hardy, NFL Draft and anything else that decides to jump at us!
